Canyon de Chelly

(pronounced d’shay)
Personally I liked it better than the Grand Canyon. I had a bit of fun with the following image because I think of it as having the guardian and the guide into the canyon, though I’m still sorting through so many shots taken from the south rim above de Chelly that posting them will have to wait a bit. Not to mention the Jeep tour with our Navajo driver down into the bottom of the canyon. You can’t go down into the canyon without a Navajo guide. I liked it that way because it made the experience richer to have one who had lived and grown up in this magical spot take us on the tour.

More to come….

Benedicto: May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. May your rivers flow without end, meandering through pastoral valleys tinkling with bells, past temples and castles and poets towers into a dark primeval forest where tigers belch and monkeys howl, through miasmal and mysterious swamps and down into a desert of red rock, blue mesas, domes and pinnacles and grottos of endless stone, and down again into a deep vast ancient unknown chasm where bars of sunlight blaze on profiled cliffs, where deer walk across the white sand beaches, where storms come and go as lightning clangs upon the high crags, where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than your deepest dreams waits for you — beyond that next turning of the canyon walls.

  1. Oh, I like that too, a guide and a guardian into a beautiful setting. How cool to be taken down by a Navajo, too. I agree, that must have made it a wonderful experience. Wouldn’t it be cool if one could always go with a guide to an unfamiliar place, one who knows it well and can share its richness with you?

    • I’m sure there are a lot of dogs that look alike on the reservation, but it almost seemed as though that dog followed us wherever we went. Looks pretty much like the one I shot in Monument Valley. As for the Raven… I swear we have one following us on all of our trips. At least it’s fun to think so! 😉

    • The lighting was heaven sent. I just barely swung the camera up in time to catch the raven in the frame. Might have preferred to have him a bit more to center… or maybe not. 🙂

  2. Oh, you’re making us wait!!! I’ve wanted to visit Canyon de Chelly since I was finally tall enough to ride the roller coaster. Haven’t made it yet. I’m looking forward to your next batch.

    • Hang in there… I almost have the South Rim tour done. Will try to get it posted tomorrow. The Jeep tour down inside the canyon is a whole lot more shots. That might take awhile, so I’ll be splitting the posts.
