Great Blue Heron

You could say I’m getting carried away with the number of shots of this splendid looking bird, but I’ve never been so close to one that didn’t seem to mind having its picture taken…. what great fun that was!

hunting:

I’m not sure but it looks like he caught a little something for lunch.

Then it was off to pose quite photogenically on an old stump and to fluff up for the benefit of the camera…

He’s just too gorgeous for words.

Landing in another spot on the other side of the lake. These shots aren’t the greatest, but I love the way they fold the wings as they’re about to land (the 3rd shot in the slideshow).

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all.

  1. Wonderful series of shots, Gunta. I know how skittish Great Blue Herons can be. Lucky you to be able to get so close! You’re right about him being too gorgeous for words. 🙂

    • First one I ever saw was while I was living in California. Didn’t know what it was then, but got a fuzzy picture as it flew off. We have quite a few around here, but they’re too skittish to get decent pictures.
