Getting some decent shots of the Rufous hummingbird male we’ve named Bubba (the redneck) since he’s taken to perching in this one spot guarding against any intruders. He wastes spends so much energy chasing off any who venture into his territory, it’s a wonder he doesn’t waste away altogether. But I do appreciate the moments when he manages to sit still between battles. They are so much fun to watch with their squabbles. Who needs TV?

Still no shots of the male Anna’s with its magenta gorget. Perhaps I’ll get a chance once Bubba moves on.

Be like the bird that, passing on her flight awhile on boughs too slight, feels them give way beneath her, and yet sings, knowing that she hath wings.

  2. Fantastic captures of that sweet hummer. Like you, I watch them throughout the day when I’m home…they provide the best entertainment! We have the Ruby Throated hummers here.

  3. Hummingbird battles are so fierce for such a tiny creature. Fascinating to watch, and when that gorget hits the right light…a total delight. Great photos Gunta. 😀

  4. In a way, it’s good that Bubba has decided that he owns the area around your feeder, at least he sits still for a few photos once in a while. We only have the ruby-throated hummers here, but their behavior is about the same.

    • Perhaps by the time Bubba moves on, I’ll have improved my hummer shooting skills to the point where I can finally get a useable shot of the Anna’s male. Even the Anna’s females are pretty elusive with Bubba around, but they seem to be feeding at another feeder I put up at a distance from the one Bubba has laid claim to.

    • The feeder hangs in front of the window by my computer or there’s another one seen from the kitchen sink, so I have been known to watch them all day.
