the sentinel

sunset-7764I wonder if the gulls just sit and enjoy the setting of the sun…

If there is one fact we really can prove, from the history that we really do know, it is that despotism can be a development, often a late development and very often indeed the end of societies that have been highly democratic. A despotism may almost be defined as a tired democracy. As fatigue falls on a community, the citizens are less inclined for that eternal vigilance which has truly been called the price of liberty; and they prefer to arm only one single sentinel to watch the city while they sleep.

  1. Very pretty…I’d say you’re doing wonderfully out there. Inspiring work, dear Gunta.

Let’s hope there are still others watching, too. Is this the same bird you have on the rock in the next post, as well? I like when they hold still for us. 😉

    • I love when they hold still, too, but I haven’t quite learned to distinguish one from another – especially at that distance. 😉 Must say I’m having a load of fun out there. Thanks for the lovely comment.

  2. The ‘Night Watch’ painted by Rembrandt was of the gilded, prettily turned out remnants of their serious predessors who guarded Holland against the Spanish invaders. The Seagull you picture, I hope, has less to fear and more to gain in seeing his day set.
What Chesterton fails to note is that although ennui may seize the blinded, indulgent citizen, the next step is anger more often than not and more often than total submission. Whether it gets reported or no there is building rage in America’s skewered outposts and cities. The pulse of the country is fast and hot.

    • It’s not looking pretty whether submission or anger wins out. But I’m definitely with you that the pulse appears to be quickening. And it’s not restricted to within our borders.

  3. The gull is probably mulling the end of his dinner hour – judging from that shot it might hVe been good 😉 The quote is so very apposite – do let us all keep awake and aware and not let others do our checking for us.
