Columbia River Gorge

ColumbiaRiver-4629Looking across to the Washington side…ColumbiaRiver-4620Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by waters.

  1. Addendum…it’s a beautiful quote, too. And I meant to say I think what love the most is the progression of blue to paler blue as each mountain recedes. We were on a hill looking at Rainier a few weeks ago and I kept marveling at that. Something about those shapes getting paler with each level of distance.

    • I, too, love that phenomenon where the blues fade as they recede in the distance. Its not always easy to catch and I just love it when I do manage it.

  2. When did you take these amazing photo? And where were you? They truly are spectacular. And, as always, the quote is perfect.

    • This was back to my second day on the road, heading East out of Portland, along the Columbia River. I’m not very good at keeping notes of places, but I suspect this was at Rooster Rock State Park.

  3. Very moving photos, Gunta…the first one strikes me beyond words, really. I have been searching for them and I’m at a loss…the image, the contents of the image, are so stirring…it’s like a core thing, striking so deeply. Maybe it’s like the quote suggests, that all things merge into one…so we are a part of all of that…the river and mountains and greenery and sky…we share common elements and…..I don’t know…it’s damn beautiful, whatever it is. What a treasure to have beheld it with your own eyes and soul….. Thank you for bringing it to us here.

    • So nice of you to say such kind things… 😉 Those words can get damn cagey I know only too well. 😉 The trip was filled with all sorts of wonders… I could call it wonder-full. Now I get to relive it through sharing it with this blogging community, allowing me to enjoy it all over again!
      Priceless!

  4. These are beautiful! I am getting excited because there is an ever growing prospect of us spending 6 weeks based in San Francisco next summer 2014 with a reasonable chance of taking a couple of weeks to head up the coast.

    • I can’t think of a more lovely place to go…. lived in San Francisco for awhile way back in my younger days. These days I prefer less hustle and bustle on my coast up north. Can’t wait to see your view of that world.

    • Haven’t read the book, but liked the movie. If I remember right, it was a different river, but all rivers tend to share that same feel I suspect. Thank you for the lovely praise.
