dreary skies

Never a glimpse of sun today…..  days like this make me wonder if spring is really on its way.IMG_1215The sky was a cold iron-grey, like the underside of a shield. A sharp breeze lifted the hems of skirts and rattled the leaves on the immature trees; a spiteful, chill wind that sought out your weakest places, the nape of your neck and your knees, and which denied you the comfort of dreaming, of retreating a little from reality.

  1. Such a different Oregon Coast than the one we saw with early autumn blue skies last year. The grey skies have a nice, mysterious quality about them though, Gunta. Spring is indeed just around the corner. 🙂

    • I rather enjoy the beach in this sort of mood. Quite often it’s warmer and there’s less wind than one might expect. There’s also a whole lot less people wandering around.

    • The sun came back the very next day (Sunday) and seems to be sticking around. It almost seems like quite of few of the storms we normally get in the winter headed south this year.

  2. I’m okay with the kind of dreary days that hover around the ocean. I find they have a bit of character to them, and can be invigorating. But maybe I’m just strange…:)

    • Thanks Scott. I think that much smaller rock looking like the original “seal rock” is yet another similar shape. The wide angle tends to distort distances, but I think the second “seal rock” is amongst the jumble of larger shapes. But it’s really hard to sort it out for some reason.

    • Actually it was warmer and less windy than usual. I love the misty, foggy sort of days at the beach. It’s when I’m back home and the house is all dark that it bugs me.

  3. I must admit to loving some of the foggy days we encountered in Oregon. I remember walking on the beach when I felt completely enveloped, not able to see much more than my hand in front of my face. There is something very mysterious about this kind of foggy day.

  4. but it’s so mysterious and alive! I love it. It’s so sunny here that you can barely open your eyes. We live in our sunglasses here..lol..

    • We got the sunshine today and I’m searching for my sunglasses. Most of all I love the changes in the weather. I think summer is the most boring because it seems to be endless days of sun and cloudless skies (and way too much warmth for my liking)!

  5. Another mirror image of the weather this side of the pond Gunta. Bitter cold too as JK so eloquently describes. It hasn’t inspired me to get all togged up and out this week. All change for us Tuesday though.. Rain and windy but at least a little warmer, give the buds a chance to develop a bit more.. Lovely image just the same though. 🙂

    • Actually yesterday was a bit warm with all that cloud cover. Today is screaming bright sunshine and still hovering around 10C… What’s the saying: “if you don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes!” 😀

    • Definite signs of spring popping up, but for some reason I wasn’t expecting a return to the really dismal looking weather we had today. I was quite warm though. (10C or more)

    • Actually our weather is sort of bizarre because it’s generally warmer when it’s cloudy. At least during the winter it’s generally much colder when there’s no cloud cover. Today the temperature was well above 50F (10C) with virtually no wind. That will reverse come summertime, when it’ll be the fog that cools us down.

  6. I left AZ too soon…..things are starting to warm up and bloom there. Now I have to wait at least another month here in Colorado before signs of spring show. Whatever was I thinking….lol. Soon Gunta soon….we’ll be photographing flowers!

    • I’ve seen some daffodils blooming in other neighborhoods, but mine haven’t opened up yet. So there are signs of spring on the way, it was just a bit of a shock when today was so utterly dismal. I need to grow some patience. Pretty soon I’ll be wishing summer would end. 😀

    • I shouldn’t complain given what much of the rest of the country has been experiencing, but we had such lovely weather for a couple of weeks that I sort of expected it to last. Thanks for giving me a bit of perspective! 😉

  7. The birds woke me up singing the last 2 weeks…..spring is definitely coming. Now we’ve had snow showers for the past 3 days…no accumulation but it is cold and windy..hey! it’s March!!

    • We had enough hints of real spring in the last couple of weeks to have me expecting it would last. You’re right about it still being March (just barely) though. Still a ways to go yet.

    • You’re most welcome… I hate to tell you this, but the image is actually full color. I don’t do black and white. Sadly, that’s exactly what it looked like at the beach today at 1pm. Thus the title. 😦

    • I went out hoping to shoot some signs of spring and there are some barely developed buds popping up, but the grey skies made it all seem like some mirage. I’ll take note of your singing frogs and keep the hope alive.
